A lantern floating up to the sky at night

New Year, Old Me

Initially my plan was to do a 2024 in review and 2025 planning post, but I’ll wait until the blog posts are caught up first. Hopefully in early February!

I usually enjoy the new year and fresh start and it has started well–especially in terms of work on this site – but it is difficult to get into a routine and I’d rather not put too many expectations on myself, especially while travelling.

As for the New Years celebrations themselves, it was a real treat to ring it in up in Pai – a memorable New Year and really cool to do something different for it.

Pai Style

This small hippy town to the north of Thailand is deceivingly buzzing. A crowd started to move towards the bridge (only one bridge) and someone along the way even gifted me a lantern – legend!

Across the bridge there was a food festival happening – the last day of it in fact – so a perfect place to get a feed and some drinks as we approached midnight.

Scores of people in groups lighting their lanterns and making their wishes. I hope they all come true! It’s a 2 person job minimum and fortunately someone was on hand to lend a helping hand 🙌

Once the countdown began the Pai party really popped off. Fireworks do seem a real NYE thing but I don’t recall seeing them back home. T’was class!

And with that, we enter 2025. Wishing everyone a great and peaceful year. Lets hope it marks a turning point in this outrageous decade.
