Running Challenge 2026

In 11 months to the day, I will be attempting my most ambitious running challenge yet.

🥁 Drum roll please 🥁

Yes, on the 27th September 2026, I’ll be doing the Berlin Marathon in aid of the Irish Cancer Society.

What makes this so ambitious? I’m glad you asked…

The Mission

Run under 2:50, raise over €2,500

I came up with this catchy tagline and everything else fell into place afterwards.

For context, my most recent marathon is a 3:08 in July 2025, and my PB is a 2:55 in May 2022. So I’ve a bit to go, but I’m feeling motivated, and I’m hoping this public declaration will hold me accountable. The fact I’m doing it for charity is a great motivator too.

Back in 2021 I raised over €2,000 for LauraLynn, thanks to the incredible generosity of my friends and family, and I’m hoping to raise even more this time around.

The Cause

Cancer touches everyone in some way through a friend, a family member, or even ourselves. This year alone, around 44,000 people in Ireland received a cancer diagnosis, that’s 120 people every day, and 5 every hour hearing the words “you have cancer”.

The Irish Cancer Society funds vital research and provides support for patients and families across Ireland.

In particular, I’m doing this in memory of my dear cousin Daragh who passed away after a very aggressive battle with cancer in March 2024. I know how the charity has done a lot to help Daragh’s family and I would hope any money I raise will assist others going through such a tough time.

The Plan

Training starts now! I’ve 11 months and hundreds of km ahead of me. I intend to rejoin Galway City Harriers in the new year - I was definitely at my fittest and fastest when I was a member of the club a few years back.

As the year progresses I have a a couple of fun challenges planned. Some taking inspiration from tag fitness, others are the times I’ve set in my running goals, and a few more I’ve conjured up and will share later.

All of this, and more information, will be kept up to date on my new dedicated Berlin page.

The Event

The Berlin Marathon will be my first Major and is a historic course, with many World Records being set there over the years.

Das ist ausgezeichnet!

I’ve lived in Berlin, and I absolutely love it there. The image of me completing this challenge as I pass through the Brandenburg Gates is etched in my mind. As is the the image of me being denied entry from Berghain later that day.

I can’t wait!
