It’s one month since my unexpected Chiang Mai Marathon and two before the Da Nang Marathon, so I think it’s time to post a training update.
Goals
Using the ABC approach taken from r/AdvancedRunning here are my goals:
Goal | Target Time | Vibe |
---|---|---|
A Goal | <2:48 | 😶🌫️ |
A whole hour faster than Chiang Mai and an 8-minute PB? Aim high eh! | ||
B Goal | ~3:15 | 🫡 |
Around my first marathon time. 30 mins faster than CM—seems achievable with decent training (context: I ran 2.59 with 7 solid weeks last year) | ||
C Goal | <3:30 | 🙌 |
Miraculously managed this in Prague | ||
F Goal | Finish | 🙏 |
Even if I have to crawl |
Training
Started well with the new year mindset. Went for some good runs around Pai, although the heat and hills meant the pace wasn’t the greatest.
Kept up the training on my return to Chiang Mai and the few days of detox definitely contributed to me getting my first sub 20 5k in a looong time.
A sweaty one
A few days after this, I had my first setback—a trip on the streets of Chiang Mai. Skint my knee, shoulder, and palms, but thankfully not too painful. Seen a lot worse—especially up in Pai—with people bandaged up after a moto mishap.
Thankfully, as a disciple of Davis Clarke, I know how to deal with setbacks.
The past two weeks I’ve gotten out for some ~5k runs at a light pace… but definitely starting to think the heat, challenging run routes, temptation to have non-run fun, among a number of other factors, means my goals will be recalibrated next month.
