Warrior

The 40th edition of The Warrior’s Run, my 5th, and also my designated August Race.

Disclaimer: this is fairly disruptive to the marathon training so for that reason I won’t be going all out. Just wanted to get that execuse in early!

The plan is to take it very easy on the mountain path. I still remember how much of a hape my quads were in after Sliabh Liag, so will be doing this as more of a fun run with family, rather than to get a big PB. (I do think low 1 hour is possible one day, but would require a lot of dedicated hill training, of which I’ve done none - Berlin is as flat as they come).

History

The 2012 edition was my first foray into running, I did my first half marathon (the short lived Sligo Half Marathon) about a month later. In 2014 I was at my initial peak, but by 2015 I was drifting out of running a bit (this was of course the Golden Age of the Sesh).

Came back in 2019 after the move Strava and training for the Dubin City Marathon. Then 2020 happened and, y’know, while in recent years I’ve either been away or it’s just not been on my radar.

But last year I was out to support all the Warriors and was really caught up in the buzz, so knew I wanted to get a place in 2026. Cheers Mam for standing out in the cold on a Thursday afternoon in May to make sure I got a place!

Got a lovely day for my first Warrior’s Run. Ended up going much better than I expected and helped me realise I’m not too bad at this running stuff.

Great craic that night too and ended up at an afterparty which set in motion a plan to go to EP the following week - back when things didn’t sell out instantly. 2012 Results.

2014

Did Tour De Picnic this year too

2013 ended up clashing with EP so I came back again in 2014.

Set my PB this year of 1:11, so have yet to break the sub 1:10. Was running really well around this time, wonder why I ever stopped. 2014 Results.

2015

Don’t remember a whole pile about this year if I’m honest. It was a summer of a lot of festivals so that explains why I stopped. 2015 Results - for some reason the acutal time is omitted.

Good craic on the Glen Road

Back to it after a bit of a break. Forgot how tough it was and didn’t run too well on the day. Was a muggy one, as is often the case in Sligo in late August. 2019 Results.

Goals

As mentioned above, I’m treating this as more of a run than a race. But I’m definitely a lot fitter than the last time I ran it so keen to see how I get on. I fear the hills will ruin me to be honest.

Goal Target Time
A Goal (New PB) <1:11
B Goal (Beat my 1st year) <1:19
C Goal (Get through it) <1:25
